A tall dark stranger of a record, ‘I Like’ with ‘Sycophant_c Man’ takes the dark nights of a thousand acid raves, and distills them onto vinyl, resulting in an electronic ideal. The latest release from Sycophant Slags, aka Mr C and Francis Harris, it’s further proof that that the two together create electronic artistry of the highest order.
Straight off, The Slags come on strong, playing rough with the electro-laden track ‘I Like.’ Perverse electro-pop princess Gene Serene provides a heavy-lidded vocal, with on-heat lyrics extolling the virtues of fashion and sex, all pressed up against searing, veering synths and brazen, skin-tight beats. The vocals rise, and the beats come down, driven to a frenzy by party-hard synths. It’s a sonic strip-tease, revealing a record with an electronic body to die for. The result is a frantic track with as many tricks as treats.
Moving into moodier musical realms, ‘Sycophant_c Man’ is a brooding bass heavy stormer that will mobilize the dancefloor. Staking its claim with an ominously good intro, the record moves on to effortlessly conquer an uncharted territory of deep, dark beats. Spiking these with mechanistic effects, and maladjusted melodies that twist and turn in the minor key, the record double-locks the dance floor into a tripped out hypno-groove. Marching the dancing army into the electronic night, ‘Sycophant_c Man’ leads the charge to acid victory.
